Join us for A Weekend with Thomas Mann

I am so thrilled to be welcoming Thomas Mann to my shop for a one of a kind trunk show! Thom and I have been friends for years and I am so proud to be hosting him here. He will be in the shop during our store hours from Friday, November 28 through Sunday, November 30, and holding a lecture on Saturday evening at 5:00pm in Suite 86, right next door to Renaissance Fine Arts gallery.

Thomas Mann is an American artist who is considered a pioneer in the art jewelry movement, focusing on the ideas and content of a piece rather than just the intrinsic value of precious materials. Thom began making jewelry in high school and has been doing it ever since. An icon of the American craft jewelry movement and a full-time practicing professional artist for close to 50 years. He describes himself as a artist working in the medium of jewelry and sculpture. Inspired by parts from machines, electronic instruments, costume jewelry, and old postcards and photos, Thom’s recurring but always changing parts give his work its storytelling quality and theatricality. He calls this design vocabulary, which combines industrial aesthetics and materials with evocative themes and romantic imagery, “Techno-Romantic”.

“The Artist as Artrepreneur” The Way of the World for Artists Since the Turn of the Century: A Visual Presentation and Lecture by Thomas Mann

“The Artist as Artrepreneur”, tracks Thomas Mann’s personal career development in parallel with the American Crafts Council and the American Crafts Movement from the 1960s until present day. In this visual presentation, Mann reveals the “10 Reasons” that have dramatically changed the way that artists must conduct themselves and their businesses, in order to survive in the current cultural environment. It is Mann’s belief that artists play a critical role in the cultural identity and development of the communities in which they work and live, and that dedicating oneself to a professional artistic path implies the need to master all of the skills necessary to keep showing up within that culture — artists must not only become masters of their mediums but equally as important, they must learn the entrepreneurial skills needed to secure their success. They must become Artrepreneurs! Part history lecture, part tale of an artist’s journey, Thomas Mann’s energetically charged perspective is educational and inspiring.
